A food allergy is an adverse health consequence stemming from a specific immune response after consuming a particular food which is perceived as unsafe. When the specific “toxic” food is identified by the stomach as unsafe, warning bell rings inside the stomach’s immune system. The bells signal that the food cannot be digested properly and need to instead be rejected. This explains the acute symptoms a person may experience after eating: stomach cramps, nausea, vomiting, and/or diarrhea, which represent the body is disagreeing with a specific food and perceives a veritable threat.
These “toxic/allergenic” food(s) kick the immune system into action and trigger a stress response throughout the body. When an immediate intense reaction, it is called a “classic” allergy” towards a specific food. By reacting to a specific antigen on the food, the immune system produces the antibody IgE which recruits mast cells throughout the body. Symptoms such as acute urticaria (hives), mouth/throat itching, lip swelling, shortness of breath, and/or generalized body itching without a rash are elicited.
Other antibody responses can occur due to the immune system reacting to a particular toxin or protein on a food. The reaction can initially be mild and gradually intensify. When a person becomes increasingly symptomatic, they have already developed full-blown damage to their digestive tract as in the case of Celiac disease. Celiac disease patients are unable to tolerate wheat protein, but cannot tolerate many other large protein molecules and acidic items (i.e., animal protein, alcohol, sugar, processed foods) since their digestive lining has been damaged over years of exposure to toxic food. The gut is unable to digest items with long transit times inside the alimentary canal and with acidic properties. The immune system consistently reacts to toxins inside foods which are unsafe for human consumption but being sold as “safe, natural, organic, healthy” by the food industry. These may include food additives, chemicals, pesticides, heavy metals, and industrial toxicants often found in all processed ready-made food, animal protein, sugar, alcohol, and other man-made food, pharmaceutical medication, candy, chewing gum,tobacco products, and beverages. The body cannot recognize these items as safe for humans nor able to tolerate the excess level of consumption/exposure in today’s lifestyle.
Common Symptoms to Problematic Foods which Have a Delayed Onset of Presentation.
The most common symptoms which represent an underlying food sensitivities are any of all of the following:
● Difficulty sleeping
● Mood swings
● Irritable stomach
Recurrent exposures to unknown food triggers can inflame the gut, activate an immune response, and cause chronic underlying inflammation.
Traditional allergy testing is not as helpful as originally believed since it is only locating at one antibody response (IgE) for an acute allergic reaction. If the immune system is extremely compromised, these tests can elicit false positive and negative results. The most common food sensitivities are typically delayed reactions which cannot be tested on IgE blood and skin tests.
There are IgG and IgA antibody tests which are significantly more accurate at detecting different levels of food sensitivities. While elimination diets are considered to be the gold standard (and are a cheap effective way of identifying the foods that trigger inflammation and symptoms in the body), they are very confusing and do not consistently help one find the right answers.
